Soil sample collection task

As a farmer interested in the soil health of my farm I want to be able to create and assign a soil sample collection task to be completed at various places around my farm so that I can have a record of where and when I sampled

Soil sample task creation must support:

• Ability to drop any number of points (or enter any number of lat / long pairs)

• Other details necessary to taking effective samples

As a farmer interested in the soil health of my farm I want to be able to complete a soil sample collection task and when I expect analysis to be complete so that I can understand my current and evolving soil health

Completion flow should support:

• Changes to assigned lat / long

• Details of the collection

• Some method to notify / follow-up on this collection task in a timeframe that allows for the soil analysis results to be returned to the user

Soil sample analysis

As a farmer interested in the soil health of my farm I want to be prompted by LiteFarm to enter the results of my completed soil collection tasks at a reasonable time frame post-collection so that I can document those results in LiteFarm to understand my current and evolving soil health

This could use the existing notification framework or some other approach.

Users should be able to:

• Enter the results of their soil analysis by hand or upload a PDF or image of results

  • OCR on the document would be a nice to have!

Soil sample analysis

As a farmer interested in the soil health of my farm I want to be able to view the results of my previous soil analysis so that I can understand my current and evolving soil health

Probably Soil Health V3. Could be an Insight (similar to the old Soil OC insight) or a layer for maps.

Product inventory

As a FO/FM I want to be able to view, modify, and retire a product in my farm inventory so that I can keep track of which products I’m using where and how their use impacts the farm

Should cover products used in:

• Soil amendments/pest controls

• Cleaning

• Feeding/medicines

• Tools/equipment/building materials

• Packaging supplies

• Seeds

Should support the attributes defined in the Augmented soil amendment task from Soil Health V1 - such as N, P, K, and mineralization rate - and potentially others. Could even do quantity as a stretch goal.

Product inventory

As a user creating a soil amendment or cleaning task I want to be able to pull from the existing list of products for that category used on the farm so that I don’t have to re-enter product attributes with each use

This is a more user friendly implementation of Soil Health V1. Should also support the ability to introduce new products to the inventory in flow.

Should LiteFarm be recommending the lat / long of collection points based on the area being sampled?

What soil collection task details are necessary to taking effective samples?

Should multi-point soil sample collection tasks be treated as one task or many?

Is there a particular type of soil sample collection types we’re looking to support?

Is there a particular type of soil sample analysis types we’re looking to support?

What format of soil analysis should we be supporting out of the box?

Should users be prompted for a follow-up timeframe to provide soil analysis results after collecting soil samples or should that be static (e.g. 2 weeks) or something else?

What is the best way to show farmers changes to soil health at the farm (versus point) level?

What attributes must and should be documented in each soil amendment task?

(Assuming we document quantity) does it make sense to include a “Low inventory quantity” alert for products that are nearing depletion?

@Duncan Brain Question about backfilling data. In SoilV1 we are looking to save percent_of_location_amended and total_area_amended_in_ha . Should data from previous tasks be backfilled with guidance from data/research team. (Based upon “location(s) total area” selected on tasks and/or crop plans “planted area” as a percent of selected locations area on tasks).

It would be nice to enforce non-null values at the db level
